What Can You Do?

Following are some easy steps you can take to reduce the carbon emissions you generate as an individual and it's easy to get started.

Power Management

Implement sensible power management on your home and work computers or ask your IT Manager or office equipment maintenance staff to enable the ENERGY STAR features on your computer and other office equipment.

"A computer left on overnight for a year creates enough CO2 to fill a double-decker bus."

Server Virtualization

Virtualization essentially lets one computer do the job of multiple computers, by sharing the resources of a single computer across multiple environments.

In addition to energy savings and lower capital expenses due to more efficient use of your hardware resources, you get high availability of resources, better desktop management, increased security, and improved disaster recovery processes when you build a virtual infrastructure.

Energy Efficient Computers

Ensure that your follow the Energy Star recommendations when purchasing your next computer.

Computers Off initiative

Support organization displaying the "Computers Off" campaign and labeling logo's.

By supporting these organizations you can be assured of their commitment to reducing their greenhouse gas admissions and helping to save our environment.

For a full list of organizations supporting this labeling initiative please check back here after the official launch on the 30th June 2008.

Other things you can do that are non computer related.

In the home
Switching off lights when you're not in the room, only filling kettles with the water needed, turning the heating down by a degree. There are lots of simple actions that will reduce our annual carbon footprint.

At work
It's as easy to cut carbon at work as it is at home. Turning off your printers, photocopiers and air conditioners when you leave, only printing what's absolutely necessary and making the most of natural light are just three ways.
